A key aspect of the pilot in Sama Serhan is the integration of water harvesting, sustainable water resource management, and capacity building for local beneficiaries, with a focus on enhancing their agricultural skills. To achieve these goals, the Sama al Serhan Dam was excavated to increase its capacity, and a farm featuring 48 hydroponic greenhouses was established. The hydroponic systems not only promote efficient water usage but are complemented by the construction of a water basin that maximizes the use of harvested rainwater. This basin is replenished with water from the Sama al Serhan Dam, reducing reliance on groundwater resources. In this way it is a showcase for farmers in the Mafraq region on how to farm without relying on groundwater resources only. By leveraging water harvesting techniques and minimal resource utilization to cultivate high-value crops, the project successfully combines entrepreneurship with sustainability. It also empowers the community to actively participate in water management and contribute to water security efforts.
